Responsible for performing quality patient abstracting, analysis, assigning of appropriate codes, and various other duties as assigned. Will be the senior Medical Record Technician Coder which assists management in planning, collecting, aggregating, analyzing, and disseminating individual patient information and aggregate clinical data in order to create a complete and legal patient health record and to generate a clinical patient care database for the facility. Performs quantitative and qualitative analysis of records to ensure all components of the records are present, accurate, and comply with VA and JCAHO requirements. Selects and assigns codes from the current version of one or more coding systems depending on regular/recurring duties. Performs a comprehensive review of the patients' entire medical record to abstract medical, surgical, laboratory, pharmaceutical, demographic, social and administrative data from the medical record in a timely manner. Understands the nuances of the CPT coding system for MCCR and accurately interprets instructional notations; bundles encounters when appropriate; identifies non-billable encounters and uses HCPCS codes per established guidelines. Ensures that professional staff is provided with the necessary technical advice and/or tools relative to the best method of recording diagnoses and operations with the intent to maximum the reimbursement potential. Actively participates in pertinent meetings with the objective of solving problems, brainstorming, educating physicians and others as to be coding policies and procedures of the facility, as well as promoting consistency of data collected. Responsible for conducting quality management data collection and continuously monitors for Health Information Management, Compliance and Business Integrity (CBI), or miscellaneous projects as requested. May be assigned inpatient or outpatient work as the need arise. Seeks to meet and maintain established productivity and accuracy monitors. Abides by AHIMS's established codes of ethical principles to safeguard the public and contribute within the scope of the profession to quality and efficiency in health care, thus promoting ethical conduct. Maintains knowledge of current information related to third party reimbursement regulations and seeks continuing education in all phases of the coding profession. Orients and instructs new personnel and/or students from affiliated health information or medical records technology programs, at the direction of the supervisor, on unit operations, coding, abstracting, and the use of the electronic medical record. Works within a team environment; support peers in meeting goals and deadlines; flexible and handles multiple tasks; works under pressure; and copes with frequently changing projects and deadlines.

This is an entry level position responsible for processing all release of information (ROI) specifically medical record requests in a timely and efficient manner ensuring accuracy and providing customers with the highest quality product and customer service.
