Major Duties:The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of medical records coding, and other medical records functions. The incumbent codes diagnosis, operations, and/or procedures from the medical record. Assures the final diagnosis and operative procedures as stated by the physician are valid and complete. Abstracts all necessary information from the record to reflect secondary complications and co-morbid conditions; Codes complex and difficult records correctly. Makes complete and accurate selection of the principle diagnosis and principal procedures/operation. Assures maximum allocation under the Diagnostic Related Groups (DRG) System, by properly sequencing diagnosis and procedures. Provides education and coding updates to medical staff, business office staff, and other health care providers on ever changing coding rules and DRG rules, regulations and guidelines. The incumbent reviews, analyzes, and performs technical evaluation of medical records for compliance and requirements of the Joint Commission of Healthcare Organizations and other accrediting agencies, as well as Federal and State legal and regulatory requirements. This analysis and evaluation consists of the following: Performs a comprehensive review to assure the presence of all comprehensive review to assure the presence of all component parts of the record, including correct identification and validation of each part by name, register number, signatures and dates where required and the presence of all reports which appear to indicated by the nature of the case. Reviews medical records for compliance with established third party reimbursement agencies special screening criteria, inconsistencies or discrepancies and discusses with appropriate medical or nursing staff. The incumbent evaluates the record for internal consistency and completeness. Ensures that the final diagnosis reflects accurately the care and treatment rendered; Makes the final determination that the record is complete, accurate and reflects sufficient data to justify the diagnosis and warrants the treatment and end results, without infringing on decisions concerning a physician's clinical judgment. Performs other position related duties as assigned.Qualifications:*GS-6: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.GS-7: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. EXAMPLES OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Analyzing/Interpreting conditions and elements to correct complicated inconsistencies' or discrepancies' in medical records; Knowledge of HIPPA, HCFA, Medicare/Medicaid, RPMS, ICD-9-CM, DRG's, Physician's Desk Reference, Current Procedural Terminology.Your education may be used to substitute specific work requirements/experience.
