The Medical Billing Assistant is primarily responsible for filing insurance claims, patient billing, and collecting payments for services rendered. This position also assists in organizing and maintaining the Customer/Patient Credit Card System.The following functions represent the duties performed by the position, but are not meant to be all-inclusive or prevent other duties from being assigned when necessary:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (100% of Time):
- Review and Process Electronic Super Bills (ESB).
- Sets up vendor billing in Patagonia Health and coordinates with the vendors.
- Prepares and mails out vendor billing statements.
- Prepares and mails outpatient billing statements.
- Performs all responsibilities to meet the timely filing of insurance claims and other sensitive requirements.
- Initiates pursuit of accurate knowledge of billing requirements independent of direction.
- Prepares batch deposit information for accountants for revenue received, such as credit card payments, private insurance checks, SSI checks, and money collected from vendors and patient billing statements.
- Co-administrator of the TransFund Customer/Patient Credit Card System, including all activities related to the system, including the batch deposits for the EFT payments received from the credit card companies.
- Cross-trains with other staff as a backup for Medicaid and Medicare billing and other reporting functions.
- Completes required training in support of the duties and responsibilities of this position.
- Other duties as assigned, including those required to fulfill activities in support of public health emergency operations.
Experience:
- Three or more years of medical billing experience required.
- One or more years of experience in utilizing spreadsheets and word processing software to keep records required.
- Experience with insurance, insurance coding, and medical accounting procedures and programs preferred.
- Experience in public health or health-related field, including familiarity with medical terminology.
Skills:
- Understanding of financial accounting systems, billing systems, reporting tools, and related procedures and software used for recording and reporting business transactions.
- Strong knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance billing.
- Ability to solve practical problems, accurately interpret instructions, and perform mathematical calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
- Good interpersonal, customer service, multi-tasking, and satisfaction-oriented skills are highly essential.
- Good administrative and analytical thinking skills.
- Excellent proofreading skills.
- Communicates agency billing procedures and results clearly and concisely.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions and work effectively with others.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- 10-key calculator by touch, data entry, and word processing skills.
Licenses: Certified Medical Billing and Coding Professional or Certified Professional Coder Preferred INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
- Frequent internal contact with Department personnel, primarily the Community Health Division.
- Frequent external contact with the Oklahoma State Department of Health.
- Frequent external contact with HMOs, Oklahoma Health Care Authority and other insurance sources.
- Frequent external contact with the Tulsa County Clerks Office and the Treasurers Office.
