Overview

Wage compensation - Min: $19.66 Max: $30.10

Under the direct supervision of the Medical Records Manager. The Health Information Specialist ensures that all Release of Information requests and Birth Certificates are processed according to internal and external policy and in a timely and accurate manner.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions :

  • Review, prep, scan and index paper records into EHR
  • Perform quality assurance on scanned records. This can include identifying and fixing manual scan errors or interface errors.
  • Receive and process release of information requests following all HIPAA regulatory requirements. These requests can be received by mail, email, fax, phone or face-to-face and submitted via fax, upload links, email, flash drive, CD, or MyHealth. This includes burning PAC images onto DVDs.
  • Perform tasks of Birth Information Specialist by reviewing all birth records and abstracting information into OVERS.
  • Assist in maintaining data integrity, including merging patient records, and notifying HIM Manager of data integrity issues, such as errors in the medical record.
  • Assisting in maintaining data integrity by reviewing records for deficiencies and making sure deficiencies are completed within regulatory timeframe.
  • Assist HIM Manager with legal medical record requests, such as subpoenas, law enforcement requests and court orders.
  • The employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position. (reference program education curriculum).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required: Minimum of one (1) year Medical Record Experience.

Preferred: Acute Care setting experience.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Occasional walking, standing, bending, or lifting light office items (up to 25 pounds). Visual acuity to view computer screens and read detailed financial documents. Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically. May be required to move throughout the healthcare facility, including administrative and clinical areas.

Working Conditions:

This position operates in a professional office setting within a healthcare facility. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The office environment is climate-controlled, well-lit, and ergonomically designed for extended computer work. While this role is primarily office-based and does not involve direct patient care, the employee may occasionally be present in clinical areas or interact with staff working in clinical environments. As such, there is a potential for exposure to infectious diseases. The organization provides appropriate training and personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed to ensure safety.
