Position Summary

The Unit Secretary is responsible for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective performance of the clerical duties of the patient care unit. As a member of a team of healthcare professionals, the unit secretary functions as a focal communication source in the nursing station, interacting with culturally diverse patients and visitors across the lifespan, all members of the interprofessional healthcare team, and community contacts. The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) assists in the delivery of routine, repetitive care for patients across the lifespan that is safe, efficient, expedient, cost-effective, and adherent to all quality standards of care. The CNA assists in the delivery of care under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, and provides care that is grounded in mutually beneficial partnerships with patients and families. The CNA will behave in a manner consistent with the ethical standards of all health care professionals. As a member of a team of health care professionals, the CNA assists in the care of patients in a wide variety of clinical settings, and work responsibilities will include a combination of patient clinical contact and clerical duties. The CNA will document in the electronic health record factual, accurate, complete, and timely information about the care provided to each patient and family.

Responsibilities

Demonstrates use of the AIDET model for communication (every patient, every family, every time).

Relies upon evidence-based standards and department policies and protocols to direct clinical care

Documents patient information in the electronic health record and reports key findings to the supervising nurse.

Performs routine unit maintenance tasks as appropriate.

Participates in life-support activities as appropriate; responds appropriately to hospital codes.

Uses department scripts, when available, to effectively communicate with other departments, patients, families, coworkers and students in person or over the phone (i.e., SBAR, CUS words, AAA, other BBE tools, etc.).

Demonstrates safe operation of all equipment in adherence to hospital policy, safety standards, infection control standards, and quality control standards.

Demonstrates effective computer skills for electronic charting and email communication.

Continually seeks to improve the quality of services provided and actively participates in unit-based, hospital-based and/or system-based quality initiatives.

Maintains a clean and safe environment.

Consistently adheres to universal precautions and performs proper hand hygiene according to Infection Control policy.

Maintains confidentiality of all protected health information.

Adheres to Safety Habits (i.e., Behavior-Based Expectations) in the provision of safe patient care

Actively participates on a Staff Action Team of own choosing

Participates in in-service education, staff meetings, forums, and other mandatory activities.

Demonstrates a commitment to ongoing growth and professional development by independently pursuing available learning opportunities.

Demonstrates effective computer skills for electronic charting and email communication.

Demonstrates financial stewardship by carefully and responsibly assisting in the management of the financial well-being of the organization through submission and implementation of cost-saving ideas, avoidance of waste in supply use, adherence to staffing matrices and effective time management and prioritization.

Minimum Requirements

Current American Heart Association HeartSaver certification is required

Listed with the N.C. Division of Health Service Regulation as a Nursing Assistant I

Non-violent crisis intervention training. If not current at time of hire must complete within first 30 days of employment and maintained without lapse during employment.
